Best Protein Shakes

“Best” here means the most protein for the calories, not the biggest number on the bottle. Every ready to drink shake below is scored on protein per 100 calories: how much protein you get for the calories you spend, a number that cannot be inflated by simply making the bottle bigger. After protein per calorie, we rank on lower sugar, then more fiber. To qualify, a shake needs at least 15g of protein per bottle and must not be high in sugar. All numbers are transcribed and verified from the manufacturer’s nutrition label. Chasing maximum grams instead? See the highest protein shakes, ranked by protein per bottle. On a GLP-1 medication? The Ozempic and Wegovy shakes list applies stricter caps.

Why protein per calorie

Two bottles can both say 30g on the front while one carries 140 calories and the other 230. Protein per 100 calories makes that difference visible, and it is the fairest way to compare an 11.5oz bottle to a 14oz one. Meal replacement shakes rank low here, on purpose

Bottles like Huel Ready-to-drink are complete meals: around 400 calories with carbohydrate, fat and fiber alongside 20 to 22g of protein. Judged purely on protein per calorie they sit near the bottom of this table, which is not a flaw; they are solving a different problem. If you want a meal in a bottle, judge them as meals. If you want protein with minimal calories, the top of this table is the right place to look.

How this ranking works

  • Every nutrition value is transcribed from the manufacturer’s published nutrition label and verified by hand, with no third party food databases.
  • Product lines are ranked, not individual flavours, so one product’s 20 flavours can’t fill the list. Each entry shows its best scoring flavour.
  • A maximum of two lines per brand keeps the list diverse.
  • Labels that don’t state sugar or fiber are treated as unknown (never as zero) and are excluded from sugar and fiber rankings.
  • Want to hit a daily protein target? The Protein Pal app lets you scan any label and track your protein day by day.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best protein shake?
The table above is the answer we can defend: every verified ready to drink shake with at least 15g of protein, ranked by protein per 100 calories, with sugar and fiber as tiebreakers. The top entries deliver around 20g of protein per 100 calories. Taste is personal, so the table shows every flavour’s numbers and each product page lists the full ingredient statement.
Is Fairlife or Premier Protein better?
On protein per calorie, the classic Premier Protein bottle (30g in 160 calories) beats Fairlife Core Power (26g in 170 calories), while Fairlife Nutrition Plan (30g in 150 calories) edges out both. Many people prefer the taste of Fairlife’s ultra-filtered milk. The side by side numbers are on our Premier Protein vs Fairlife Core Power comparison.
Are ready to drink shakes as good as protein powder?
The protein is comparable; the price is not. Per gram of protein, ready to drink bottles typically cost two to three times more than powder you mix yourself. You are paying for convenience, which is worth it on busy days and worthless if the bottles sit in the pantry.
Are these shakes lactose free?
Many of the milk based bottles are: ultra-filtered milk brands like Fairlife and Slate remove most lactose in processing, and several whey isolate bottles are low enough in lactose to be labelled lactose free. It varies by product, so check the product page and the label rather than assuming by brand.
