Protein Powders Without Seed Oils
We checked the verbatim ingredient statement of every protein powder in our database for refined seed and vegetable oils: soybean, canola (rapeseed), sunflower, safflower, cottonseed, corn, grapeseed, rice bran and unspecified vegetable oil, including their high oleic variants. The powders below list none of them, ranked by protein per 100 calories. Worth knowing: sunflower or soy lecithin, an emulsifier that helps powder mix without clumping, is not a refined seed oil and does not disqualify a powder here. A powder only qualifies when we hold its full ingredient statement; an unknown label never counts as clean.

Where seed oils show up in protein powder
Mostly in creamers and “instantised” fat systems: some mass gainer and meal replacement style powders add sunflower or soybean oil powder for texture and calories. Straight whey isolates and most plant powders have no need for added oil, which is why the majority of powders in our database pass this check.
Lecithin is not a seed oil
Nearly every powder, including very clean ones, lists sunflower or soy lecithin. Lecithin is a phospholipid emulsifier used at fractions of a gram to stop clumping; it is not a refined cooking oil and is not part of the seed oil debate about omega-6 linoleic acid intake, so it does not disqualify a powder on this page.
How this ranking works
- Every nutrition value is transcribed from the manufacturer’s published nutrition label and verified by hand, with no third party food databases.
- Product lines are ranked, not individual flavours, so one product’s 20 flavours can’t fill the list. Each entry shows its best scoring flavour.
- A maximum of two lines per brand keeps the list diverse.
- Labels that don’t state sugar or fiber are treated as unknown (never as zero) and are excluded from sugar and fiber rankings.
- Want to hit a daily protein target? The Protein Pal app lets you scan any label and track your protein day by day.
Frequently asked questions
- Does whey protein contain seed oils?
- Plain whey does not; it is a dairy protein. When a whey powder fails this check it is almost always because of an added creamer or texture system containing sunflower or soybean oil, which appears on the ingredient statement and is what we check.
