Lactose Free Protein Powders
Two kinds of powder work for lactose intolerance. Plant proteins (pea, rice, pumpkin seed) contain no lactose at all. Pure whey isolates and hydrolysates are filtered to under 1% lactose, a level most lactose intolerant people tolerate comfortably. Every powder below is one of the two: its protein comes entirely from plants, or entirely from whey isolate and hydrolysate with no concentrate, milk protein or casein anywhere in the blend. Ranked by protein per 100 calories. One honest caution: whey isolate is still a milk protein, so none of the whey entries are suitable for a milk allergy, which is an immune reaction to milk proteins rather than to lactose.

Zero lactose vs under 1%: the two groups on this list
Plant powders are lactose free in the literal sense; there is no dairy in them. Whey isolate and hydrolysate are dairy proteins filtered until almost no lactose remains, typically under 1% by weight, or roughly a quarter of a gram in a full scoop. Clinical guidance generally treats up to 12g of lactose in one sitting as tolerable for most lactose intolerant adults, so a fraction of a gram is far below the threshold most people react to. If you know you react to even trace lactose, stick to the plant entries.
What disqualifies a powder
Whey concentrate (which can run up to 8% lactose), plain milk protein, casein and caseinates all carry meaningful lactose, so any powder listing them anywhere in its protein blend is excluded, even when the front of the tub says isolate. This is checked against the protein sources on the actual ingredient statement, not the marketing name.
How this ranking works
- Every nutrition value is transcribed from the manufacturer’s published nutrition label and verified by hand, with no third party food databases.
- Product lines are ranked, not individual flavours, so one product’s 20 flavours can’t fill the list. Each entry shows its best scoring flavour.
- A maximum of two lines per brand keeps the list diverse.
- Labels that don’t state sugar or fiber are treated as unknown (never as zero) and are excluded from sugar and fiber rankings.
- Want to hit a daily protein target? The Protein Pal app lets you scan any label and track your protein day by day.
Frequently asked questions
- Is whey isolate really OK for lactose intolerance?
- Usually, yes. Isolation filters whey to under about 1% lactose, and most lactose intolerant adults comfortably handle several grams per sitting. A scoop of isolate carries a fraction of a gram. People with severe sensitivity or those avoiding dairy entirely should choose the plant entries instead.
- Is lactose free the same as dairy free?
- No. The plant powders here are both. The whey isolate entries are ultra low in lactose but are still made from milk, so they are not dairy free and not safe for a milk allergy.
- Why is collagen not on this list?
- Collagen powders are lactose free, but collagen is an incomplete protein missing tryptophan, so it contributes less to muscle than the complete proteins ranked here. If you use collagen for other reasons, it does fit a lactose free diet.
