Best Protein Powder for Weight Loss
When you are eating less, a protein powder should add protein without adding much else. Every powder below meets one standard per serving: at least 20g of protein, 150 calories or less, 3g of sugar or less, and a complete protein (so no collagen, and no single source powders missing essential amino acids). Qualifying powders are ranked by protein per 100 calories, then lower sugar, then more fiber. All numbers are transcribed and verified from the manufacturer’s label. Need your daily target first? The protein calculator for weight loss gives you a number in seconds. Sensitive stomach? See the easy to digest powders. On Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro or Zepbound? The GLP-1 powder list applies our GLP-1 standard. For how to fit a shake into a calorie budget, read our guide to protein powder for weight loss.
Top picks (November 2026): Isopure Zero Carb (25g protein, 100 calories, 25g protein per 100 calories), then Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Isolate (25g protein, 100 calories, 25g protein per 100 calories) and Nutricost Whey Protein Isolate (30g protein, 130 calories, 23.1g protein per 100 calories).

Why protein per calorie matters in a deficit
Two scoops can both promise 25g of protein while one costs 100 calories and the other 170. On a calorie budget that gap is a small snack every day. Protein per 100 calories shows it directly: the powders at the top of this table are close to pure protein, so almost every calorie you spend on them is doing the job you bought them for.
Whey, casein or plant protein for weight loss?
Whey isolate is usually the leanest option, with the most protein per calorie and very little lactose, which is why it fills the top of this table. Casein digests slowly and forms a thicker shake, which some people find keeps them fuller between meals, though the research on fullness differences is modest. Plant powders work well if you avoid dairy; blends of pea with rice or other proteins give a complete amino acid profile, and single source pea powders flagged as incomplete are left off this list. Pick the one you will drink consistently.
Which powders are easiest to digest?
Most bloating from protein powder comes from lactose in whey concentrate, or from sugar alcohols and added fibers in the flavouring. Whey isolates, hydrolysates and plant isolates are the lowest lactose formats. Our easy to digest list filters for exactly those, and every product page here shows the full ingredient statement so you can screen for anything that disagrees with you.
What about price?
We do not rank on price, because prices change weekly and vary by retailer and tub size. To compare fairly, work out the cost per 25g of protein: divide the tub price by the number of servings, then divide by the grams of protein per serving and multiply by 25. Large tubs of whey usually cost the least per gram of protein; premium isolates and organic plant blends usually cost the most.
How to use protein powder to lose weight
Use a shake to replace something, not to add to what you already eat: a scoop in water instead of a snack, or alongside a smaller breakfast. Mixing with water keeps a shake to the label calories, while milk adds roughly 80 to 150 calories a cup. One or two scoops a day is plenty for most people; the rest of your protein should come from food, which fills you up more than a drink does.
How this ranking works
- Every nutrition value is transcribed from the manufacturer’s published nutrition label and verified by hand, with no third party food databases.
- Product lines are ranked, not individual flavours, so one product’s 20 flavours can’t fill the list. Each entry shows its best scoring flavour.
- A maximum of two lines per brand keeps the list diverse.
- Labels that don’t state sugar or fiber are treated as unknown (never as zero) and are excluded from sugar and fiber rankings.
- Want to hit a daily protein target? The Protein Pal app lets you scan any label and track your protein day by day.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the best protein powder for weight loss?
- The table above ranks every verified powder that meets our weight loss standard: at least 20g of complete protein, 150 calories or less and 3g of sugar or less per serving, ordered by protein per 100 calories. As of November 2026, the top three on our best protein powder for weight loss list are Isopure Zero Carb (25g protein, 100 calories, 25g protein per 100 calories), then Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Isolate (25g protein, 100 calories, 25g protein per 100 calories) and Nutricost Whey Protein Isolate (30g protein, 130 calories, 23.1g protein per 100 calories).
- Which protein powder for weight loss has the lowest sugar?
- Every powder on this list has 3g of sugar or less per serving, and most whey isolates have 0 to 1g. Right now Isopure Zero Carb and Isopure Low Carb list 0g of sugar per serving on the label.
- Is whey or plant protein better for weight loss?
- Both work if they fit your calories. Whey isolate usually gives the most protein per calorie and digests easily for most people. Plant powders suit anyone avoiding dairy; choose a blend that is a complete protein. They usually carry a few more calories per gram of protein, so whey fills the top of this table, and our plant based powder ranking compares them on their own.
- Is casein protein good for weight loss?
- It can be. Casein digests slowly and makes a thicker shake, which some people find more filling, especially as an evening snack. Calorie for calorie it is close to whey, so choose based on taste and how full it keeps you.
- Which protein powder is easiest to digest?
- Whey isolates, whey hydrolysates and plant isolates are the lowest in lactose, the most common cause of bloating. If a powder still bothers you, check the ingredients for sugar alcohols, inulin or chicory root fiber, and gums.
- Which protein powder for weight loss is the best value?
- Compare cost per 25g of protein rather than tub price: tub price divided by servings, divided by grams of protein per serving, times 25. Large tubs of whey usually come out cheapest. We do not rank on price because it changes too often to verify.
- Can I use these powders on a GLP-1 medication?
- Most of them, yes. Our GLP-1 powder list applies a separate standard (at least 10g of protein per 100 calories, at least 10g per serving, 200 calories or less, complete protein) and marks slower digesting casein powders, since GLP-1 medications already slow the stomach.
- How much protein do I need to lose weight?
- About 0.54g per lb of body weight per day (1.2g/kg), or 0.73g/lb (1.6g/kg) if you strength train twice a week or more. For a 180lb person that is 98g a day, or 131g with strength training.
