Zepbound Protein Calculator

Work out how much protein you need per day on Zepbound. Tirzepatide produces some of the fastest weight loss of any medication, and the 0.54g/lb (1.2g/kg) floor protects your muscle while it happens.

GLP-1 Protein Recommendation

GLP-1 medications cause rapid weight loss. Research shows that a meaningful share of that loss can be lean mass rather than fat. A protein floor of 0.54g/lb (1.2g/kg) helps preserve muscle during treatment.

Protein on Zepbound: Why Your Target Goes Up, Not Down

Zepbound (tirzepatide) delivered average weight loss of around 20 percent of body weight in its main trial, more than any earlier GLP-1 medication. That is the appeal, and also the risk: in rapid weight loss, a meaningful share of the weight lost can be muscle rather than fat if protein intake is low. Losing muscle lowers your metabolism and makes regain more likely after treatment.

That is why this calculator applies a floor of 0.54g of protein per lb of body weight per day (1.2g per kg), in line with 2025 medical society guidance of 0.54 to 0.73g/lb (1.2 to 1.6g/kg) for people on GLP-1 medications. On tirzepatide, where losses are faster, treat that as a hard minimum.

Hitting the Number on a Small Appetite

Zepbound suppresses appetite enough that protein will not take care of itself. What works:

  • Eat the protein on your plate first, every meal, and treat the rest as optional
  • Spread intake over 3 to 4 small eating occasions rather than one big meal
  • Keep low-volume, high protein foods stocked for the days you can barely eat
  • Use shakes to cover shortfalls; 25 to 30g of protein in a small bottle is hard to beat on a suppressed appetite
  • Add resistance training, because protein protects muscle best when the muscle is in use; our strength training on GLP-1s guide covers how to start

Track It, Because You Will Not Feel a Shortfall

Under-eating protein on Zepbound does not feel like anything at the time; the damage only shows up later in body composition. The Protein Pal app has a GLP-1 mode that sets this same protein floor and makes logging each meal a job of seconds. Free on iOS and Android.
